Sa'ala Sā 'ilun Bi`adh ā bin Wāq i`in (Al-Ma`ār ij : 1).
070.001 A questioner asked about a Penalty to befall-
سَأَلَ سَا ئِلٌ بِعَذَا بٍ وَاق ِ عٍ
Lilkāfir y na Lay sa Lahu Dāfi`un (Al-Ma`ār ij : 2).
070.002 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,-
لِلْكَافِر ينَ لَيْ سَ لَهُ دَافِعٌ
Mina A ll āhi Dh ī A l-Ma`ār ij i (Al-Ma`ār ij : 3).
070.003 (A Penalty) from God, Lord of the Ways of Ascent.
مِنَ ا للَّ هِ ذِي ا لْمَعَارِ جِ
Ta`ru ju A l-Malā 'ikatu Wa A r-Rū ĥu 'Ilay hi Fī Yaw min Kā na Miq dāru hu Kh am sī na 'Alfa Sanah in (Al-Ma`ār ij : 4).
070.004 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years:
تَعْرُجُ ا لْمَلاَئِكَةُ وَا ل رُّو حُ إِلَيْ هِ فِي يَوْ مٍ كَا نَ مِقْ دَارُهُ خَ مْسِي نَ أَلْفَ سَنَةٍ
Fāş bir Ş ab rā an Jamīlāan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 5).
070.005 Therefore do thou hold Patience,- a Patience of beautiful (contentment).
فَاصْ بِر ْ صَ بْ راً جَمِيلاً
'Inn ahum Yara wnahu Ba`īdāan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 6).
070.006 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event):
إِنَّ هُمْ يَرَ وْنَهُ بَعِيداً
Wa Nar ā hu Q ar ībāan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 7).
070.007 But We see it (quite) near.
وَنَرَ ا هُ قَ رِ يباً
Yaw ma Takū nu A s-Samā 'u Kālmuhli (Al-Ma`ār ij : 8).
070.008 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass,
يَوْ مَ تَكُو نُ ا ل سَّمَا ءُ كَالْمُهْلِ
Wa Takū nu A l-Jibā lu Kāl`ihni (Al-Ma`ār ij : 9).
070.009 And the mountains will be like wool,
وَتَكُو نُ ا لْجِبَا لُ كَالْعِهْنِ
Wa Lā Yas'alu Ĥamī mun Ĥamīmāan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 10).
070.010 And no friend will ask after a friend,
وَلاَ يَسْأَلُ حَمِي مٌ حَمِيماً
Yubaş ş arūnahum ۚ Yawaddu A l-Muj r imu Law Yaftadī Min `Adh ā bi Yawmi'idh in Bibanī hi (Al-Ma`ār ij : 11).
070.011 Though they will be put in sight of each other,- the sinner's desire will be: Would that he could redeem himself from the Penalty of that Day by (sacrificing) his children,
يُبَصَّ رُونَهُمْ ۚ يَوَدُّ ا لْمُجْ رِ مُ لَوْ يَفْتَدِي مِن ْ عَذَا بِ يَوْمِئِذٍ بِبَنِيهِ
Wa Ş āĥibatihi Wa 'Akh ī hi (Al-Ma`ār ij : 12).
070.012 His wife and his brother,
وَصَ احِبَتِهِ وَأَخِ يهِ
Wa Faş īlatihi A llatī Tu'uwy hi (Al-Ma`ār ij : 13).
070.013 His kindred who sheltered him,
وَفَصِ يلَتِهِ ا لَّتِي تُؤْويهِ
Wa Man Fī A l-'Arđi Jamī`āan Th umm a Yun jī hi (Al-Ma`ār ij : 14).
070.014 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him:
وَمَن ْ فِي ا لأَرْضِ جَمِيعاً ثُمّ َ يُن جِيهِ
Kallā ۖ 'Inn ahā Lažá (Al-Ma`ār ij : 15).
070.015 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!-
كَلاَّ ۖ إِنَّ هَا لَظَ ى
Nazzā`atan Lilsh sh awá (Al-Ma`ār ij : 16).
070.016 Plucking out (his being) right to the skull!-
نَزَّاعَة ً لِلشَّوَى
Tad `ū Man 'Ad bara Wa Tawallá (Al-Ma`ār ij : 17).
070.017 Inviting (all) such as turn their backs and turn away their faces (from the Right).
تَدْ عُوا مَن ْ أَدْ بَرَ وَتَوَلَّى
Wa Jama`a Fa'aw`á (Al-Ma`ār ij : 18).
070.018 And collect (wealth) and hide it (from use)!
وَجَمَعَ فَأَوْعَى
'Inn a A l-'In sā na Kh uliq a Halū`āan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 19).
070.019 Truly man was created very impatient;-
إِنّ َ ا لإِن سَا نَ خُ لِقَ هَلُوعاً
'Idh ā Massahu A sh -Sh arru Jazū`āan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 20).
070.020 Fretful when evil touches him;
إِذَا مَسَّهُ ا ل شَّرُّ جَزُوعاً
Wa 'Idh ā Massahu A l-Kh ay ru Manū`āan (Al-Ma`ār ij : 21).
070.021 And niggardly when good reaches him;-
وَإِذَا مَسَّهُ ا لْخَ يْ رُ مَنُوعاً
'Illā A l-Muş allī na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 22).
070.022 Not so those devoted to Prayer;-
إِلاَّ ا لْمُصَ لِّينَ
Al-Ladh ī na Hum `Alá Ş alātihim Dā 'imū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 23).
070.023 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer;
ا لَّذِي نَ هُمْ عَلَى صَ لاَتِهِمْ دَا ئِمُونَ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Fī 'Am wālihim Ĥaq q un Ma`lū mun (Al-Ma`ār ij : 24).
070.024 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right.
وَالَّذِي نَ فِي أَمْوَالِهِمْ حَقّ ٌ مَعْلُومٌ
Lilssā 'ili Wa A l-Maĥrū mi (Al-Ma`ār ij : 25).
070.025 For the (needy) who asks and him who is prevented (for some reason from asking);
لِلسَّا ئِلِ وَا لْمَحْرُومِ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Yuş addiq ū na Biyaw mi A d-Dī ni (Al-Ma`ār ij : 26).
070.026 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment;
وَالَّذِي نَ يُصَ دِّقُ و نَ بِيَوْ مِ ا ل دِّينِ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Hum Min `Adh ā bi Ra bbihim Mush fiq ū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 27).
070.027 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,-
وَالَّذِي نَ هُمْ مِن ْ عَذَا بِ رَ بِّهِمْ مُشْفِقُ ونَ
'Inn a `Adh ā ba Ra bbihim Gh ay ru Ma'mū nin (Al-Ma`ār ij : 28).
070.028 For their Lord's displeasure is the opposite of Peace and Tranquillity;-
إِنّ َ عَذَا بَ رَ بِّهِمْ غَ يْ رُ مَأْمُونٍ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Hum Lifurūjihim Ĥāfižū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 29).
070.029 And those who guard their chastity,
وَالَّذِي نَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُ ونَ
'Illā `Alá 'Azwājihim 'Aw Mā Malakat 'Aymānuhum Fa'inn ahum Gh ay ru Malūmī na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 30).
070.030 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed,
إِلاَّ عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أَوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّ هُمْ غَ يْ رُ مَلُومِينَ
Famani A b tagh á Warā 'a Dh ālika Fa'ūlā 'ika Humu A l-`Ādū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 31).
070.031 But those who trespass beyond this are transgressors;-
فَمَنِ ا بْ تَغَ ى وَرَا ءَ ذَلِكَ فَأُ وْلَا ئِكَ هُمُ ا لْعَادُونَ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Hum Li'mānātihim Wa `Ahdihim Rā `ū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 32).
070.032 And those who respect their trusts and covenants;
وَالَّذِي نَ هُمْ لِأمَانَاتِهِمْ وَعَهْدِهِمْ رَ اعُونَ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Hum Bish ahādātihim Q ā 'imū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 33).
070.033 And those who stand firm in their testimonies;
وَالَّذِي نَ هُمْ بِشَهَادَاتِهِمْ قَ ا ئِمُونَ
Wa A l-Ladh ī na Hum `Alá Ş alātihim Yuĥāfižū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 34).
070.034 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;-
وَالَّذِي نَ هُمْ عَلَى صَ لاَتِهِمْ يُحَافِظُ ونَ
'Ūlā 'ika Fī Jann ā tin Mukra mū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 35).
070.035 Such will be the honoured ones in the Gardens (of Bliss).
أُ وْلَا ئِكَ فِي جَنّ َا تٍ مُكْرَ مُونَ
Famā li A l-Ladh ī na Kafarū Q ibalaka Muhţ i`ī na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 36).
070.036 Now what is the matter with the Unbelievers that they rush madly before thee-
فَمَا لِ ا لَّذِي نَ كَفَرُوا قِ بَلَكَ مُهْطِ عِينَ
`Ani A l-Yamī ni Wa `Ani A sh -Sh imā li `Izī na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 37).
070.037 From the right and from the left, in crowds?
عَنِ ا لْيَمِي نِ وَعَنِ ا ل شِّمَا لِ عِزِينَ
'Aya 55ma`u Kullu A m r i'in Minhum 'An Yud kh ala Jann ata Na`ī min (Al-Ma`ār ij : 38).
070.038 Does every man of them long to enter the Garden of Bliss?
أَيَطْ مَعُ كُلُّ ا مْرِ ئٍ مِنْ هُمْ أَن ْ يُدْ خَ لَ جَنَّ ةَ نَعِيمٍ
Kallā ۖ 'Inn ā Kh alaq nāhum Mimm ā Ya`lamū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 39).
070.039 By no means! For We have created them out of the (base matter) they know!
كَلاَّ ۖ إِنَّ ا خَ لَقْ نَاهُمْ مِمَّ ا يَعْلَمُونَ
Falā 'Uq simu Bira bbi A l-Mash ār iq i Wa A l-Magh ār ibi 'Inn ā Laq ādirū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 40).
070.040 Now I do call to witness the Lord of all points in the East and the West that We can certainly-
فَلاَ أُقْ سِمُ بِرَ بِّ ا لْمَشَارِ قِ وَا لْمَغَ ارِ بِ إِنَّ ا لَقَ ادِرُونَ
`Alá 'An Nubaddila Kh ayrā an Minhum Wa Mā Naĥnu Bimasbūq ī na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 41).
070.041 Substitute for them better (men) than they; And We are not to be defeated (in Our Plan).
عَلَى أَن ْ نُبَدِّلَ خَ يْراً مِنْ هُمْ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمَسْبُوقِ ينَ
Fadh arhum Yakh ūđū Wa Yal`abū Ĥattá Yulāq ū Yawmahu mu A l-Ladh ī Yū`adū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 42).
070.042 So leave them to plunge in vain talk and play about, until they encounter that Day of theirs which they have been promised!-
فَذَرْهُمْ يَخُ وضُ وا وَيَلْعَبُوا حَتَّى يُلاَقُ وا يَوْمَهُمُ ا لَّذِي يُوعَدُونَ
Yaw ma Yakh ru jū na Mina A l-'Aj dāth i Sirā `āan Ka'ann ahum 'Ilá Nuş ubin Yūfiđū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 43).
070.043 The Day whereon they will issue from their sepulchres in sudden haste as if they were rushing to a goal-post (fixed for them),-
يَوْ مَ يَخْ رُجُو نَ مِنَ ا لأَجْ دَا ثِ سِرَ اعاً كَأَنَّ هُمْ إِلَى نُصُ بٍ يُوفِضُ ونَ
Kh āsh i`atan 'Ab ş āru hum Tarhaq uhum Dh illatun ۚ Dh ālika A l-Yaw mu A l-Ladh ī Kānū Yū`adū na (Al-Ma`ār ij : 44).
070.044 Their eyes lowered in dejection,- ignominy covering them (all over)! such is the Day the which they are promised!
خَ اشِعَةً أَبْ صَ ارُهُمْ تَرْهَقُ هُمْ ذِلَّةٌ ۚ ذَلِكَ ا لْيَوْ مُ ا لَّذِي كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ
