| THIS CHAPTER of 46 early Meccan verses was revealed after Prophets 21 and before Bursting Apart 82. Its soaring message is mystic in content and poetic in form. | Wa An-Nāzi`āti Gharqāan | 079-001* By those who snatch [men's souls] away at their last gasp | وَالنَّازِعَاتِ غَرْقا ً |
| Wa An-Nāshiţāti Nashţāan | 079-002* and others who act more nimbly | وَالنَّاشِطَاتِ نَشْطا ً |
| Wa As-Sābiĥāti Sabĥāan | 079-003* as well as those floating by, | وَالسَّابِحَاتِ سَبْحا ً |
| Fālssābiqāti Sabqāan | 079-004* and still others racing past, | فَالسَّابِقَاتِ سَبْقا ً |
| Fālmudabbirāti 'Amrāan | 079-005* to regulate some matter! | فَالْمُدَبِّرَاتِ أَمْرا ً |
| Yawma Tarjufu Ar-Rājifahu | 079-006* Some day a rumbling will be felt; | يَوْمَ تَرْجُفُ الرَّاجِفَةُ |
| Tatba`uhā Ar-Rādifahu | 079-007* another will follow on its heels! | تَتْبَعُهَا الرَّادِفَةُ |
| Qulūbun Yawma'idhin Wājifahun | 079-008* Hearts will be pounding on that day; | قُلُوبٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ وَاجِفَة ٌ |
| 'Abşāruhā Khāshi`ahun | 079-009* their sight will be downcast. | أَبْصَارُهَا خَاشِعَة ٌ |
| Yaqūlūna 'A'innā Lamardūdūna Fī Al-Ĥāfirahi | 079-010* They will say: "Will we be restored to our original state | يَقُولُونَ أَئِنَّا لَمَرْدُودُونَ فِي الْحَافِرَةِ |
| 'A'idhā Kunnā `Ižāmāan Nakhirahan | 079-011* once we are crumbled bones?" | أَئِذَا كُنَّا عِظَاما ً نَخِرَة ً |
| Qālū Tilka 'Idhāan Karratun Khāsirahun | 079-012*They say: 'That would then be a losing proposition! | قَالُوا تِلْكَ إِذا ً كَرَّةٌ خَاسِرَة ٌ |
| Fa'innamā Hiya Zajratun Wāĥidahun | 079-013* There would only be a single rebuke | فَإِنَّمَا هِيَ زَجْرَةٌ وَاحِدَة ٌ |
| Fa'idhā Hum Bis-Sāhirahi | 079-014* and then they would never be able to sleep again! Moses and Pharaoh | فَإِذَا هُمْ بِالسَّاهِرَةِ |
| Hal 'Tāka Ĥadīthu Mūsá | 079-015* Has Moses' story ever come to you, | هَلْ أتَاكَ حَدِيثُ مُوسَى |
| 'Idh Nādāhu Rabbuhu Bil-Wādi Al-Muqaddasi Ţūáan | 079-016* when his Lord called to him by the sacred valley of Tuwa? | إِذْ نَادَاه ُ رَبُّه ُ بِالْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ طُوى ً |
| Adh/hab 'Ilá Fir`awna 'Innahu Ţaghá | 079-017* "Go off to Pharaoh; he has acted arrogantly. | اذْهَبْ إِلَى فِرْعَوْنَ إِنَّه ُ طَغَى |
| Faqul Hal Laka 'Ilá 'An Tazakká | 079-018* SAY: 'Would you care to be purified | فَقُلْ هَلْ لَكَ إِلَى أَنْ تَزَكَّى |
| Wa 'Ahdiyaka 'Ilá Rabbika Fatakhshá | 079-019* and for me to guide you to your Lord so you may [learn to] dread [Him]?"' | وَأَهْدِيَكَ إِلَى رَبِّكَ فَتَخْشَى |
| Fa'arāhu Al-'Āyata Al-Kubrá | 079-020* He showed him the greatest sign. | فَأَرَاهُ الآيَةَ الْكُبْرَى |
| Fakadhdhaba Wa `Aşá | 079-021* Yet he denied and defied it; | فَكَذَّبَ وَعَصَى |
| Thumma 'Adbara Yas`á | 079-022* then he turned away to try his best. | ثُمَّ أَدْبَرَ يَسْعَى |
| Faĥashara Fanādá | 079-023* He summoned, and called out, | فَحَشَرَ فَنَادَى |
| Faqāla 'Anā Rabbukumu Al-'A`lá | 079-024* and said: "I am your supreme Llord!" | فَقَالَ أَنَا رَبُّكُمُ الأَعْلَى |
| Fa'akhadhahu Al-Lahu Nakāla Al-'Ākhirati Wa Al-'Ūlá | 079-025* God seized him as an example in (both) the Hereafter and from the First [life]. | فَأَخَذَهُ اللَّهُ نَكَالَ الآخِرَةِ وَالأُولَى |
| 'Inna Fī Dhālika La`ibratan Liman Yakhshá | 079-026* In that there lies a lesson for anyone who dreads [retribution]. (ii) | إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَعِبْرَة ً لِمَنْ يَخْشَى |
| 'A'antum 'Ashaddu Khalqāan 'Ami As-Samā'u ۚ Banāhā | 079-027* Were you harder to creat, or the sky He has raised? | أَأَنْتُمْ أَشَدُّ خَلْقا ً أَمِ السَّمَاءُ ۚ بَنَاهَا |
| Rafa`a Samkahā Fasawwāhā | 079-028* He has lifted its canopy up and smoothed it off. | رَفَعَ سَمْكَهَا فَسَوَّاهَا |
| Wa 'Aghţasha Laylahā Wa 'Akhraja Đuĥāhā | 079-029* He darkens its night and brings forth its morning glow; | وَأَغْطَشَ لَيْلَهَا وَأَخْرَجَ ضُحَاهَا |
| Wa Al-'Arđa Ba`da Dhālika Daĥāhā | 079-030* and the earth has He spread out besides, | وَالأَرْضَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ دَحَاهَا |
| 'Akhraja Minhā Mā'ahā Wa Mar`āhā | 079-031* and produced its water and its pasturage from it. | أَخْرَجَ مِنْهَا مَاءَهَا وَمَرْعَاهَا |
| Wa Al-Jibāla 'Arsāhā | 079-032* The mountains has He anchored | وَالْجِبَالَ أَرْسَاهَا |
| Matā`āan Lakum Wa Li'an`āmikum | 079-033* as an enjoyment for you and for your livestock. | مَتَاعا ً لَكُمْ وَلِأَنْعَامِكُمْ |
| Fa'idhā Jā'ati Aţ-Ţāmmatu Al-Kubrá | 079-034* When the greatest calamity comes along, | فَإِذَا جَاءَتِ الطَّامَّةُ الْكُبْرَى |
| Yawma Yatadhakkaru Al-'Insānu Mā Sa`á | 079-035* on the day when everyman will remember whatever he has tried to accomplish, | يَوْمَ يَتَذَكَّرُ الإِنسَانُ مَا سَعَى |
| Wa Burrizati Al-Jaĥīmu Liman Yará | 079-036* and Hades will loom forth for anyone to see, | وَبُرِّزَتِ الْجَحِيمُ لِمَنْ يَرَى |
| Fa'ammā Man Ţaghá | 079-037* anyone who has acted arrogantly | فَأَمَّا مَنْ طَغَى |
| Wa 'Āthara Al-Ĥayāata Ad-Dunyā | 079-038* and preferred worldly life | وَآثَرَ الْحَيَاةَ الدُّنْيَا |
| Fa'inna Al-Jaĥīma Hiya Al-Ma'wá | 079-039* will have Hades for a dwelling place. | فَإِنَّ الْجَحِيمَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى |
| Wa 'Ammā Man Khāfa Maqāma Rabbihi Wa Nahá An-Nafsa `Ani Al-Hawá | 079-040* Anyone who has been afraid to stand before his Lord and restrained himself from passion, | وَأَمَّا مَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّه ِِ وَنَهَى النَّفْسَ عَنِ الْهَوَى |
| Fa'inna Al-Jannata Hiya Al-Ma'wá | 079-041* will have the Garden for a dwelling place. The Final Hour | فَإِنَّ الْجَنَّةَ هِيَ الْمَأْوَى |
| Yas'alūnaka `Ani As-Sā`ati 'Ayyāna Mursāhā | 079-042* They will ask you about the Hour: "When will it come to pass? | يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ السَّاعَةِ أَيَّانَ مُرْسَاهَا |
| Fīma 'Anta Min Dhikrāhā | 079-043* Why are you reminding us about it?" | فِيمَ أَنْتَ مِنْ ذِكْرَاهَا |
| 'Ilá Rabbika Muntahāhā | 079-044* It lies up to your Lord to set it. | إِلَى رَبِّكَ مُنتَهَاهَا |
| 'Innamā 'Anta Mundhiru Man Yakhshāhā | 079-045* You are merely a warner for anyone who dreads it; | إِنَّمَا أَنْتَ مُنذِرُ مَنْ يَخْشَاهَا |
| Ka'annahum Yawma Yarawnahā Lam Yalbathū 'Illā `Ashīyatan 'Aw Đuĥāhā | 079-046* just as some day they shall see they have hung around for only an evening, or its morning glow. | كَأَنَّهُمْ يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَهَا لَمْ يَلْبَثُوا إِلاَّ عَشِيَّةً أَوْ ضُحَاهَا |
