| THIS CHAPTER of 22 verses arranged in three sections dates from Madina, like the previous one. It was revealed after the one on Hypocrites 63 and before The [Inner] Apartments 49. This thus makes it the second of the two Madinese chapters which are placed here, as one can see with its longer verses and more involved paragraphs. Its theme condemning arrogant conduct likewise gives it an affinity to the beginning of Chapter 24 Light (sections i-iii). The woman referred to was Khawla bint-Thalaba, and the incident refers to her domestic problems. The mock divorce of the pagan Arabs which bound the rejected wife to her household chores is condemned at the very beginning of the chapter (i). The chapter also contains some lyrical passages concerning God's awareness of everything, especially of intrigue. Manners at meetings and parliamentary procedure are discussed in section ii. God hears whatever you both discuss; God is Alert, Observant. Mock Divorce Condemned | قَدْ سَمِعَ اللَّهُ قَوْلَ الَّتِي تُجَادِلُكَ فِي زَوْجِهَا وَتَشْتَكِي إِلَى اللَّهِ وَاللَّهُ يَسْمَعُ تَحَاوُرَكُمَا إِنَّ اللَّهَ سَمِيعٌ بَصِيرٌ |
| Al-Ladhīna Yužāhirūna Minkum Min Nisā'ihim Mā Hunna 'Ummahātihim ۖ 'In 'Ummahātuhum 'Illā Al-Lā'ī Waladnahum ۚ Wa 'Innahum Layaqūlūna Munkarāan Mina Al-Qawli Wa Zūrāan ۚ Wa 'Inna Al-Laha La`afūwun Ghafūrun | 058-002* Those among you who back away from their wives even though they are not their mothers (their mothers are only the ones who have given birth to them) are making a dishonorable statement as well as twisting things around. Yet God is Pardoning, Forgiving. | الَّذِينَ يُظَاهِرُونَ مِنْكُمْ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ مَا هُنَّ أُمَّهَاتِهِمْ ۖ إِنْ أُمَّهَاتُهُمْ إِلاَّ اللاَّئِي وَلَدْنَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّهُمْ لَيَقُولُونَ مُنْكَرا ً مِنَ الْقَوْلِ وَزُورا ً ۚ وَإِنَّ اللَّهَ لَعَفُوٌّ غَفُورٌ |
| Wa Al-Ladhīna Yužāhirūna Min Nisā'ihim Thumma Ya`ūdūna Limā Qālū Fataĥrīru Raqabatin Min Qabli 'An Yatamāssā ۚ Dhālikum Tū`ažūna Bihi Wa ۚ Allāhu Bimā Ta`malūna Khabīrun | 058-003* The ones who back away from their wives [as if they were their mothers], then retract whatever they have said, should free a captive before either of them may touch one another [again]. That you are instructed to do; God is Informed about anything you do. | وَالَّذِينَ يُظَاهِرُونَ مِنْ نِسَائِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَتَمَاسَّا ۚ ذَلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِه ِِ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ |
| Faman Lam Yajid Faşiyāmu Shahrayni Mutatābi`ayni Min Qabli 'An Yatamāssā ۖ Faman Lam Yastaţi` Fa'iţ`āmu Sittīna Miskīnāan ۚ Dhālika Litu'uminū Bil-Lahi Wa Rasūlihi ۚ Wa Tilka Ĥudūdu Al-Lahi ۗ Wa Lilkāfirīna `Adhābun 'Alīmun | 058-004* Whoever does not find such [a captive to free], should then fast for two consecutive months before either of them may touch one another. Anyone who is still unable [to conform] should then feed sixty paupers. That is [laid down] so you may believe in God and His messenger; such are God's limits. Disbelievers will have painful torment! | فَمَنْ لَمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِنْ قَبْلِ أَنْ يَتَمَاسَّا ۖ فَمَنْ لَمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينا ً ۚ ذَلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرَسُولِه ِِ ۚ وَتِلْكَ حُدُودُ اللَّهِ ۗ وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ |
| 'Inna Al-Ladhīna Yuĥāddūna Al-Laha Wa Rasūlahu Kubitū Kamā Kubita Al-Ladhīna Min Qablihim ۚ Wa Qad 'Anzalnā 'Āyātin Bayyinātin ۚ Wa Lilkāfirīna `Adhābun Muhīnun | 058-005* The ones who want to limit God and His messenger will be restrained just as those before them were restrained. We have sent down clear signs: disbelievers will have disgraceful torment. | إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَه ُ كُبِتُوا كَمَا كُبِتَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ وَقَدْ أَنْزَلْنَا آيَات ٍ بَيِّنَاتٍ ۚ وَلِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابٌ مُهِينٌ |
| Yawma Yab`athuhumu Al-Lahu Jamī`āan Fayunabbi'uhum Bimā `Amilū ۚ 'Aĥşāhu Al-Lahu Wa Nasūhu Wa ۚ Allāhu `Alá Kulli Shay'in Shahīdun | 058-006* Some day God will raise them all up again and notify them about anything they have done. God has calculated it while they have forgotten it. God is a Witness for everything! Intrigue God is Everwhere (ii) | يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعا ً فَيُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا عَمِلُوا ۚ أَحْصَاهُ اللَّهُ وَنَسُوه ُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ شَهِيدٌ |
| 'Alam Tará 'Anna Al-Laha Ya`lamu Mā Fī As-Samāwāti Wa Mā Fī Al-'Arđi ۖ Mā Yakūnu Min Najwá Thalāthatin 'Illā Huwa Rābi`uhum Wa Lā Khamsatin 'Illā Huwa Sādisuhum Wa Lā 'Adná Min Dhālika Wa Lā 'Akthara 'Illā Huwa Ma`ahum 'Ayna Mā Kānū ۖ Thumma Yunabbi'uhum Bimā `Amilū Yawma Al-Qiyāmati ۚ 'Inna Al-Laha Bikulli Shay'in `Alīmun | 058-007* Have you not considered how God knows whatever is in Heaven and whatever is on Earth? No private conversation ever takes place among three [persons] unless He is their Fourth, nor among five unless He is their Sixth, nor [any number] less than that nor greater unless He is with them, wherever they may be. Then on Resurrection Day, He will notify them about whatever they have been doing. God is Aware of everything! | أَلَمْ تَرَى أَنَّ اللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَمَا فِي الأَرْضِ ۖ مَا يَكُونُ مِنْ نَجْوَى ثَلاَثَةٍ إِلاَّ هُوَ رَابِعُهُمْ وَلاَ خَمْسَةٍ إِلاَّ هُوَ سَادِسُهُمْ وَلاَ أَدْنَى مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَلاَ أَكْثَرَ إِلاَّ هُوَ مَعَهُمْ أَيْنَ مَا كَانُوا ۖ ثُمَّ يُنَبِّئُهُمْ بِمَا عَمِلُوا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمٌ |
| 'Alam Tará 'Ilá Al-Ladhīna Nuhū `Ani An-Najwá Thumma Ya`ūdūna Limā Nuhū `Anhu Wa Yatanājawna Bil-'Ithmi Wa Al-`Udwāni Wa Ma`şiyati Ar-Rasūli Wa 'Idhā Jā'ūka Ĥayyawka Bimā Lam Yuĥayyika Bihi Al-Lahu Wa Yaqūlūna Fī 'Anfusihim Lawlā Yu`adhdhibunā Al-Lahu Bimā Naqūlu ۚ Ĥasbuhum Jahannamu Yaşlawnahā ۖ Fabi'sa Al-Maşīru | 058-008* Have you not considered the ones who, even though they have been forbidden to [carry on any] intrigue, still go back to what they have been forbidden to do and conspire out of sin and enmity, and in defiance of the Messenger? Whenever they come to you, they greet you the way God never greets you, and tell themselves: "Should God not punish us for what we say?" Hell will be enough for them; they shall roast in it, for it is such an awful goal to have. | أَلَمْ تَرَى إِلَى الَّذِينَ نُهُوا عَنِ النَّجْوَى ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا نُهُوا عَنْهُ وَيَتَنَاجَوْنَ بِالإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَمَعْصِيَةِ الرَّسُولِ وَإِذَا جَاءُوكَ حَيَّوْكَ بِمَا لَمْ يُحَيِّكَ بِهِ اللَّهُ وَيَقُولُونَ فِي أَنفُسِهِمْ لَوْلاَ يُعَذِّبُنَا اللَّهُ بِمَا نَقُولُ ۚ حَسْبُهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ يَصْلَوْنَهَا ۖ فَبِئْسَ الْمَصِيرُ |
| Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū 'Idhā Tanājaytum Falā Tatanājaw Bil-'Ithmi Wa Al-`Udwāni Wa Ma`şiyati Ar-Rasūli Wa Tanājaw Bil-Birri Wa At-Taqwá ۖ Wa Attaqū Al-Laha Al-Ladhī 'Ilayhi Tuĥsharūna | 058-009* You who believe, whenever you confer with one another, do not conspire out of sin and enmity, and in defiance of the Messenger: confer virtuously and through a sense of duty. Heed God, before whom you will appear. | يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا تَنَاجَيْتُمْ فَلاَ تَتَنَاجَوْا بِالإِثْمِ وَالْعُدْوَانِ وَمَعْصِيَةِ الرَّسُولِ وَتَنَاجَوْا بِالْبِرِّ وَالتَّقْوَى وَاتَّقُوا ۖ اللَّهَ الَّذِي إِلَيْهِ تُحْشَرُونَ |
| 'Innamā An-Najwá Mina Ash-Shayţāni Liyaĥzuna Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Wa Laysa Biđārrihim Shay'āan 'Illā Bi'idhni Al-Lahi ۚ Wa `Alá Al-Lahi Falyatawakkali Al-Mu'uminūna | 058-010* Intrigue comes only from Satan, so he may sadden those who believe. Yet he will not harm them in any way except with God's permission; so on God let believers rely. | إِنَّمَا النَّجْوَى مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ لِيَحْزُنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَلَيْسَ بِضَارِّهِمْ شَيْئا ً إِلاَّ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ |
| Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū 'Idhā Qīla Lakum Tafassaĥū Fī Al-Majālisi Fāfsaĥū Yafsaĥi Al-Lahu Lakum ۖ Wa 'Idhā Qīla Anshuzū Fānshuzū Yarfa`i Al-Lahu Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Minkum Wa Al-Ladhīna 'Ūtū Al-`Ilma Darajātin Wa ۚ Allāhu Bimā Ta`malūna Khabīrun | 058-011* You who believe, whenever someone tells you to make room at (any) sessions, then make room; God will make room for you [elsewhere]. When it is said: "Move on ahead!", then move on up. God will raise those of you who believe, in rank, as well as the ones who are given knowledge. God is Informed about anything you do. Manners at Meetings; Parlimentary Procedure | يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ تَفَسَّحُوا فِي الْمَجَالِسِ فَافْسَحُوا يَفْسَحِ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ وَإِذَا ۖ قِيلَ انشُزُوا فَانشُزُوا يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ وَاللَّهُ ۚ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ |
| Yā 'Ayyuhā Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū 'Idhā Nājaytumu Ar-Rasūla Faqaddimū Bayna Yaday Najwākum Şadaqatan ۚ Dhālika Khayrun Lakum Wa 'Aţharu ۚ Fa'in Lam Tajidū Fa'inna Al-Laha Ghafūrun Raĥīmun | 058-012* You who believe, whenever you confer with the Messenger, offer some sort of charity before you confer [with him]; that will be better for you, and purer [besides]. Yet if you do not find anything [to give], God is still Forgiving, Merciful. | يَاأَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا نَاجَيْتُمُ الرَّسُولَ فَقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَة ً ذَلِكَ ۚ خَيْرٌ لَكُمْ وَأَطْهَرُ فَإِنْ ۚ لَمْ تَجِدُوا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ |
| 'A'ashfaqtum 'An Tuqaddimū Bayna Yaday Najwākum Şadaqātin ۚ Fa'idh Lam Taf`alū Wa Tāba Al-Lahu `Alaykum Fa'aqīmū Aş-Şalāata Wa 'Ātū Az-Zakāata Wa 'Aţī`ū Al-Laha Wa Rasūlahu Wa ۚ Allāhu Khabīrun Bimā Ta`malūna | 058-013* Are you worried about proffering some charity before your consultation? If you do not do so, God still turns towards you, so keep up prayer and pay the welfare tax, and obey God and His messenger. God is Informed about anything you do. Hypocrites (iii) | أَأَشْفَقْتُمْ أَنْ تُقَدِّمُوا بَيْنَ يَدَيْ نَجْوَاكُمْ صَدَقَاتٍ ۚ فَإِذْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَتَابَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ فَأَقِيمُوا الصَّلاَةَ وَآتُوا الزَّكَاةَ وَأَطِيعُوا اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَه ُ ۚ وَاللَّهُ خَبِيرٌ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ |
| 'Alam Tará 'Ilá Al-Ladhīna Tawallaw Qawmāan Ghađiba Al-Lahu `Alayhim Mā Hum Minkum Wa Lā Minhum Wa Yaĥlifūna `Alá Al-Kadhibi Wa Hum Ya`lamūna | 058-014* Have you not considered those who make friends with a folk whom God is angry with? They are neither on your side nor yet on their own, and they perjure themselves while they know it. | أَلَمْ تَرَى إِلَى الَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا قَوْما ً غَضِبَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ مَا هُمْ مِنْكُمْ وَلاَ مِنْهُمْ وَيَحْلِفُونَ عَلَى الْكَذِبِ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ |
| 'A`adda Al-Lahu Lahum `Adhābāan Shadīdāan ۖ 'Innahum Sā'a Mā Kānū Ya`malūna | 058-015* God has prepared severe torment for them; with them, anything they do is evil. | أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ عَذَابا ً شَدِيدا ً ۖ إِنَّهُمْ سَاءَ مَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ |
| Attakhadhū 'Aymānahum Junnatan Faşaddū `An Sabīli Al-Lahi Falahum `Adhābun Muhīnun | 058-016* They have taken their faith as a disguise and obstructed God's way. They will have disgraceful torment; | اتَّخَذُوا أَيْمَانَهُمْ جُنَّة ً فَصَدُّوا عَنْ سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ فَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ مُهِين ٌ |
| Lan Tughniya `Anhum 'Amwāluhum Wa Lā 'Awlāduhum Mina Al-Lahi Shay'āan ۚ 'Ūlā'ika 'Aşĥābu An-Nāri ۖ Hum Fīhā Khālidūna | 058-017* neither their wealth nor their children will help them out in any way with God. Those will become imnates of the Fire; they will remain there for ever. | لَنْ تُغْنِيَ عَنْهُمْ أَمْوَالُهُمْ وَلاَ أَوْلاَدُهُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ شَيْئا ً ۚ أُوْلَائِكَ أَصْحَابُ النَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَالِدُونَ |
| Yawma Yab`athuhumu Al-Lahu Jamī`āan Fayaĥlifūna Lahu Kamā Yaĥlifūna Lakum ۖ Wa Yaĥsabūna 'Annahum `Alá Shay'in ۚ 'Alā 'Innahum Humu Al-Kādhibūna | 058-018* Some day God will raise them all up together and they will swear to Him just as they have swom to you; they reckon they will get something out of it. They are such liars! | يَوْمَ يَبْعَثُهُمُ اللَّهُ جَمِيعا ً فَيَحْلِفُونَ لَه ُ كَمَا يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ ۖ وَيَحْسَبُونَ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ ۚ أَلاَ إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْكَاذِبُونَ |
| Astaĥwadha `Alayhimu Ash-Shayţānu Fa'ansāhum Dhikra Al-Lahi ۚ 'Ūlā'ika Ĥizbu Ash-Shayţāni ۚ 'Alā 'Inna Ĥizba Ash-Shayţāni Humu Al-Khāsirūna | 058-019* Satan has won them over and made them forget to mention God; those are Satan's party. Yet Satan's side will be the losers! | اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَأَنسَاهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ ۚ أُوْلَائِكَ حِزْبُ الشَّيْطَانِ ۚ أَلاَ إِنَّ حِزْبَ الشَّيْطَانِ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ |
| 'Inna Al-Ladhīna Yuĥāddūna Al-Laha Wa Rasūlahu 'Ūlā'ika Fī Al-'Adhallīna | 058-020* Those who would limit God and His messenger are the vilest sort. Believers | إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يُحَادُّونَ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَهُ~ُ أُوْلَائِكَ فِي الأَذَلِّينَ |
| Kataba Al-Lahu La'aghlibanna 'Anā Wa Rusulī ۚ 'Inna Al-Laha Qawīyun `Azīzun | 058-021* God has written: "I shall prevail, both I Myself and My messengers!" God is Strong, Powerful. | كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا وَرُسُلِي ۚ إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ |
| Lā Tajidu Qawmāan Yu'uminūna Bil-Lahi Wa Al-Yawmi Al-'Ākhiri Yuwāddūna Man Ĥādda Al-Laha Wa Rasūlahu Wa Law Kānū 'Ābā'ahum 'Aw 'Abnā'ahum 'Aw 'Ikhwānahum 'Aw `Ashīratahum ۚ 'Ūlā'ika Kataba Fī Qulūbihimu Al-'Īmāna Wa 'Ayyadahum Birūĥin Minhu ۖ Wa Yudkhiluhum Jannātin Tajrī Min Taĥtihā Al-'Anhāru Khālidīna Fīhā ۚ Rađiya Al-Lahu `Anhum Wa Rađū `Anhu ۚ 'Ūlā'ika Ĥizbu Al-Lahi ۚ 'Alā 'Inna Ĥizba Al-Lahi Humu Al-Mufliĥūna | 058-022* You will not find any people who believe in God and the Last Day showing affection for anyone who places limits on God and His messenger, even though they are their own fathers, their sons, their brothers or anyone from their family connection. With those He will engrave faith on their hearts, assist them with a spirit from Himself, and will show them into gardens through which rivers flow, to live there for ever. God will approve of them while they will be pleased with Him. Those are on God's side. God's party are those who shall be successful! | لاَ تَجِدُ قَوْما ً يُؤْمِنُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ يُوَادُّونَ مَنْ حَادَّ اللَّهَ وَرَسُولَه ُ وَلَوْ كَانُوا آبَاءَهُمْ أَوْ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ أَوْ إِخْوَانَهُمْ أَوْ عَشِيرَتَهُمْ ۚ أُوْلَائِكَ كَتَبَ فِي قُلُوبِهِمُ الإِيمَانَ وَأَيَّدَهُمْ بِرُوحٍ مِنْهُ ۖ وَيُدْخِلُهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِنْ تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ خَالِدِينَ فِيهَا ۚ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ وَرَضُوا عَنْهُ ۚ أُوْلَائِكَ حِزْبُ اللَّهِ ۚ أَلاَ إِنَّ حِزْبَ اللَّهِ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ |
