| THIS CHAPTER was revealed after [Winds] Sent Forth 77 and before This Countryside 90. It consists of 45 middle Meccan verses arranged in three sections, except for v. 38 (III) which dates from the period in Madina. Some persons recommend that this chapter be recited on Fridays. Here we begin a fresh group of seven chapters which date from the Meccan period. This one deals with man's lack of responsibility, God's care for him (II), and what will happen on Doomsday (II). It ends with recommendations concerning the times for prayer (III). The illustrations offered are apocalyptic and intended to shock disbelievers into thinking about the advantages presented by Islam. | Bal `Ajibū 'An Jā'ahum Mundhirun Minhum Faqāla Al-Kāfirūna Hādhā Shay'un `Ajībun | 050-002* Indeed they are astonished that a warner should come to them from among themselves. Disbelievers say: 'This is an astonishing thing! | بَلْ عَجِبُوا أَنْ جَاءَهُمْ مُنْذِرٌ مِنْهُمْ فَقَالَ الْكَافِرُونَ هَذَا شَيْءٌ عَجِيبٌ |
| 'A'idhā Mitnā Wa Kunnā Turābāan ۖ Dhālika Raj`un Ba`īdun | 050-003* Why, when we have died and become dust, that will mean such a long way to return!" | أَئِذَا مِتْنَا وَكُنَّا تُرَابا ً ۖ ذَلِكَ رَجْعٌ بَعِيدٌ |
| Qad `Alimnā Mā Tanquşu Al-'Arđu Minhum ۖ Wa `Indanā Kitābun Ĥafīžun | 050-004* We well know how the earth hems them in, and We (also) have a Book to record it in. | قَدْ عَلِمْنَا مَا تَنْقُصُ الأَرْضُ مِنْهُمْ ۖ وَعِنْدَنَا كِتَابٌ حَفِيظٌ |
| Bal Kadhdhabū Bil-Ĥaqqi Lammā Jā'ahum Fahum Fī 'Amrin Marījin | 050-005* Rather they denied the Truth when it came to them, so (now) they are in a confused state. | بَلْ كَذَّبُوا بِالْحَقِّ لَمَّا جَاءَهُمْ فَهُمْ فِي أَمْرٍ مَرِيجٍ |
| 'Afalam Yanžurū 'Ilá As-Samā'i Fawqahum Kayfa Banaynāhā Wa Zayyannāhā Wa Mā Lahā Min Furūjin | 050-006* Have they not seen how We have built the sky above them and made it seem attractive? There are no flaws in it. | أَفَلَمْ يَنْظُرُوا إِلَى السَّمَاءِ فَوْقَهُمْ كَيْفَ بَنَيْنَاهَا وَزَيَّنَّاهَا وَمَا لَهَا مِنْ فُرُوجٍ |
| Wa Al-'Arđa Madadnāhā Wa 'Alqaynā Fīhā Rawāsiya Wa 'Anbatnā Fīhā Min Kulli Zawjin Bahījin | 050-007* And We have spread the earth out and cast headlands upon it, and grown every sort of lovely species on it | وَالأَرْضَ مَدَدْنَاهَا وَأَلْقَيْنَا فِيهَا رَوَاسِيَ وَأَنْبَتْنَا فِيهَا مِنْ كُلِّ زَوْج ٍ بَهِيجٍ |
| Tabşiratan Wa Dhikrá Likulli `Abdin Munībin | 050-008* as a token and Reminder for every repentant worshipper. | تَبْصِرَة ً وَذِكْرَى لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُنِيبٍ |
| Wa Nazzalnā Mina As-Samā'i Mā'an Mubārakāan Fa'anbatnā Bihi Jannātin Wa Ĥabba Al-Ĥaşīdi | 050-009* We have sent down blessed water from the sky and We grow gardens with it as well as grain to be harvested, | وَنَزَّلْنَا مِنَ السَّمَاءِ مَاء ً مُبَارَكا ً فَأَنْبَتْنَا بِه ِِ جَنَّاتٍ وَحَبَّ الْحَصِيدِ |
| Wa An-Nakhla Bāsiqātin Lahā Ţal`un Nađīdun | 050-010* and soaring palms which have compact clusters | وَالنَّخْلَ بَاسِقَات ٍ لَهَا طَلْعٌ نَضِيد ٌ |
| Rizqāan Lil`ibādi ۖ Wa 'Aĥyaynā Bihi Baldatan Maytāan ۚ Kadhālika Al-Khurūju | 050-011* as sustenance for worshippers. We have revived a dead countryside with it; thus will (your) reappearance be. | رِزْقا ً لِلْعِبَادِ ۖ وَأَحْيَيْنَا بِه ِِ بَلْدَة ً مَيْتا ً ۚ كَذَلِكَ الْخُرُوجُ |
| Kadhdhabat Qablahum Qawmu Nūĥin Wa 'Aşĥābu Ar-Rassi Wa Thamūdu | 050-012* Before them, Noah's folk denied it, and the companions at the Well, and Thamud, | كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَأَصْحَابُ الرَّسِّ وَثَمُودُ |
| Wa `Ādun Wa Fir`awnu Wa 'Ikhwānu Lūţin | 050-013* Ad, and Pharaoh, as well as Lot's brethren, | وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ وَإِخْوَانُ لُوطٍ |
| Wa 'Aşĥābu Al-'Aykati Wa Qawmu Tubba`in ۚ Kullun Kadhdhaba Ar-Rusula Faĥaqqa Wa`īdi | 050-014* the inhabitants of the Forest, and the people of Tubbac; each rejected messengers, so My warning was confirmed. | وَأَصْحَابُ الأَيْكَةِ وَقَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ ۚ كُلٌّ كَذَّبَ الرُّسُلَ فَحَقَّ وَعِيدِ |
| 'Afa`ayīnā Bil-Khalqi Al-'Awwali ۚ Bal Hum Fī Labsin Min Khalqin Jadīdin | 050-015* Were We worn out by the first creation? Yet they are in a quandary about any fresh creation! God's Care (II) | أَفَعَيِينَا بِالْخَلْقِ الأَوَّلِ ۚ بَلْ هُمْ فِي لَبْسٍ مِنْ خَلْقٍ جَدِيدٍ |
| Wa Laqad Khalaqnā Al-'Insāna Wa Na`lamu Mā Tuwaswisu Bihi Nafsuhu ۖ Wa Naĥnu 'Aqrabu 'Ilayhi Min Ĥabli Al-Warīdi | 050-016* We have created man and know what his soul is whispering within him. We are Closer to him than his jugular vein! | وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الإِنسَانَ وَنَعْلَمُ مَا تُوَسْوِسُ بِه ِِ نَفْسُه ُ ۖ وَنَحْنُ أَقْرَبُ إِلَيْهِ مِنْ حَبْلِ الْوَرِيدِ |
| 'Idh Yatalaqqá Al-Mutalaqqiyāni `Ani Al-Yamīni Wa `Ani Ash-Shimāli Qa`īdun | 050-017* When both encountering [angels] meet, seated to the right and to the left, | إِذْ يَتَلَقَّى الْمُتَلَقِّيَانِ عَنِ الْيَمِينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمَالِ قَعِيد ٌ |
| Mā Yalfižu Min Qawlin 'Illā Ladayhi Raqībun `Atīdun | 050-018* he will utter no statement unless he has an observer on hand ready to note it down. Doomsday | مَا يَلْفِظُ مِنْ قَوْل ٍ إِلاَّ لَدَيْهِ رَقِيبٌ عَتِيد ٌ |
| Wa Jā'at Sakratu Al-Mawti Bil-Ĥaqqi ۖ Dhālika Mā Kunta Minhu Taĥīdu | 050-019*The agony of death will come [and confront you] with the Truth; that is what you have been trying to escape! | وَجَاءَتْ سَكْرَةُ الْمَوْتِ بِالْحَقِّ ۖ ذَلِكَ مَا كُنْتَ مِنْهُ تَحِيدُ |
| Wa Nufikha Fī Aş-Şūri ۚ Dhālika Yawmu Al-Wa`īdi | 050-020* The Trumpet shall be blown: that will be the day of the Threat! | وَنُفِخَ فِي الصُّورِ ۚ ذَلِكَ يَوْمُ الْوَعِيدِ |
| Wa Jā'at Kullu Nafsin Ma`ahā Sā'iqun Wa Shahīdun | 050-021* Every soul shall come along; each will have a driver and a witness: | وَجَاءَتْ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَعَهَا سَائِقٌ وَشَهِيد ٌ |
| Laqad Kunta Fī Ghaflatin Min Hādhā Fakashafnā `Anka Ghiţā'aka Fabaşaruka Al-Yawma Ĥadīdun | 050-022* "You have been so heedless of this, that We have removed your blinders from you so your sight may be keen today!" | لَقَدْ كُنْتَ فِي غَفْلَةٍ مِنْ هَذَا فَكَشَفْنَا عَنْكَ غِطَاءَكَ فَبَصَرُكَ الْيَوْمَ حَدِيد ٌ |
| Wa Qāla Qarīnuhu Hādhā Mā Ladayya `Atīdun | 050-023* His soulmate will say: "All this lying before me needs to be checked into; | وَقَالَ قَرِينُه ُ هَذَا مَا لَدَيَّ عَتِيد ٌ |
| 'Alqiyā Fī Jahannama Kulla Kaffārin `Anīdin | 050-024* let us both toss every stubborn disbeliever into Hell, | أَلْقِيَا فِي جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيد ٍ |
| Mannā`in Lilkhayri Mu`tadin Murībin | 050-025* [since he is] hindering good, aggressive, suspicious, | مَنَّاع ٍ لِلْخَيْرِ مُعْتَدٍ مُرِيبٍ |
| Al-Ladhī Ja`ala Ma`a Al-Lahi 'Ilahāan 'Ākhara Fa'alqiyāhu Fī Al-`Adhābi Ash-Shadīdi | 050-026* someone who has set up some other deity alongside God! Toss him into severe torment!" | الَّذِي جَعَلَ مَعَ اللَّهِ إِلَها ً آخَرَ فَأَلْقِيَاه ُ فِي الْعَذَابِ الشَّدِيدِ |
| Qāla Qarīnuhu Rabbanā Mā 'Aţghaytuhu Wa Lakin Kāna Fī Đalālin Ba`īdin | 050-027* His soulmate will say: "Our Lord, I did not make him act arrogantly, but he was gone too far astray." | قَالَ قَرِينُه ُ رَبَّنَا مَا أَطْغَيْتُه ُ وَلَكِنْ كَانَ فِي ضَلاَل ٍ بَعِيد ٍ |
| Qāla Lā Takhtaşimū Ladayya Wa Qad Qaddamtu 'Ilaykum Bil-Wa`īdi | 050-028* He will say: "Do not argue in My presence! I had already sent the Threat ahead to you (all)! | قَالَ لاَ تَخْتَصِمُوا لَدَيَّ وَقَدْ قَدَّمْتُ إِلَيْكُمْ بِالْوَعِيدِ |
| Mā Yubaddalu Al-Qawlu Ladayya Wa Mā 'Anā Bižallāmin Lil`abīdi | 050-029* The sentence will not be changed within My presence, nor am I unjust towards My worshippers." (III) | مَا يُبَدَّلُ الْقَوْلُ لَدَيَّ وَمَا أَنَا بِظَلاَّم ٍ لِلْعَبِيدِ |
| Yawma Naqūlu Lijahannama Hal Amtala'ti Wa Taqūlu Hal Min Mazīdin | 050-030* On the day We shall say to Hell: "Are you filled up.", it will say: "Are there any more to be added?" Paradise | يَوْمَ نَقُولُ لِجَهَنَّمَ هَلْ امْتَلَأْتِ وَتَقُولُ هَلْ مِنْ مَزِيد ٍ |
| Wa 'Uzlifati Al-Jannatu Lilmuttaqīna Ghayra Ba`īdin | 050-031* The Garden will be brought up a short distance from the heedful; | وَأُزْلِفَتِ الْجَنَّةُ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ غَيْرَ بَعِيد ٍ |
| Hādhā Mā Tū`adūna Likulli 'Awwābin Ĥafīžin | 050-032* This is what you have been promised, for everyone who turns to observe it, | هَذَا مَا تُوعَدُونَ لِكُلِّ أَوَّابٍ حَفِيظ ٍ |
| Man Khashiya Ar-Raĥmana Bil-Ghaybi Wa Jā'a Biqalbin Munībin | 050-033* who lives in awe of the Mercy-giving, even though [He is] Unseen, and comes with a repentant heart. | مَنْ خَشِيَ الرَّحْمَنَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَجَاءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُنِيبٍ |
| Adkhulūhā Bisalāmin ۖ Dhālika Yawmu Al-Khulūdi | 050-034* Enter it peacefully; that is the day that will last for ever." | ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلاَمٍ ۖ ذَلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُلُودِ |
| Lahum Mā Yashā'ūna Fīhā Wa Ladaynā Mazīdun | 050-035* "They will have anything they wish in it, and more besides [when they are] in Our presence. | لَهُمْ مَا يَشَاءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيد ٌ |
| Wa Kam 'Ahlaknā Qablahum Min Qarnin Hum 'Ashaddu Minhum Baţshāan Fanaqqabū Fī Al-Bilādi Hal Min Maĥīşin | 050-036* How many generations have We wiped out before them? They were much braver than they are and stormed through the land. Yet had they any escape? | وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا قَبْلَهُمْ مِنْ قَرْنٍ هُمْ أَشَدُّ مِنْهُمْ بَطْشا ً فَنَقَّبُوا فِي الْبِلاَدِ هَلْ مِنْ مَحِيص ٍ |
| 'Inna Fī Dhālika Ladhikrá Liman Kāna Lahu Qalbun 'Aw 'Alqá As-Sam`a Wa Huwa Shahīdun | 050-037* In that is a Reminder for anyone who has a heart or lends an ear while he [also] acts as a witness. Times of Prayer | إِنَّ فِي ذَلِكَ لَذِكْرَى لِمَنْ كَانَ لَه ُ قَلْبٌ أَوْ أَلْقَى السَّمْعَ وَهُوَ شَهِيد ٌ |
| Wa Laqad Khalaqnā As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđa Wa Mā Baynahumā Fī Sittati 'Ayyāmin Wa Mā Massanā Min Lughūbin | 050-038* We created Heaven and Earth and whatever lies in between them six days, while no weariness ever affects Us. | وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا فِي سِتَّةِ أَيَّامٍ وَمَا مَسَّنَا مِنْ لُغُوبٍ |
| Fāşbir `Alá Mā Yaqūlūna Wa Sabbiĥ Biĥamdi Rabbika Qabla Ţulū`i Ash-Shamsi Wa Qabla Al-Ghurūbi | 050-039* So be patient about anything they may say, and hymn your Lord's praise before the sun's rising and before its setting, | فَاصْبِرْ عَلَى مَا يَقُولُونَ وَسَبِّحْ بِحَمْدِ رَبِّكَ قَبْلَ طُلُوعِ الشَّمْسِ وَقَبْلَ الْغُرُوبِ |
| Wa Mina Al-Layli Fasabbiĥhu Wa 'Adbāra As-Sujūdi | 050-040* and at night. Glorify Him whenever you finish bowing down on your knees. | وَمِنَ اللَّيْلِ فَسَبِّحْهُ وَأَدْبَارَ السُّجُودِ |
| Wa Astami` Yawma Yunādi Al-Munādi Min Makānin Qarībin | 050-041* Listen for the day when the Crier will call out from a nearby place, | وَاسْتَمِعْ يَوْمَ يُنَادِ الْمُنَادِ مِنْ مَكَان ٍ قَرِيبٍ |
| Yawma Yasma`ūna Aş-Şayĥata Bil-Ĥaqqi ۚ Dhālika Yawmu Al-Khurūji | 050-042* a day when they will really hear the Blast; that will be the day to reappear in! | يَوْمَ يَسْمَعُونَ الصَّيْحَةَ بِالْحَقِّ ۚ ذَلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُرُوجِ |
| 'Innā Naĥnu Nuĥyī Wa Numītu Wa 'Ilaynā Al-Maşīru | 050-043* It is We Who give life and bring death, and toward Us lies the goal | إِنَّا نَحْنُ نُحْيِي وَنُمِيتُ وَإِلَيْنَا الْمَصِيرُ |
| Yawma Tashaqqaqu Al-'Arđu `Anhum Sirā`āan ۚ Dhālika Ĥashrun `Alaynā Yasīrun | 050-044* on a day when the earth will split open quickly because of them. Such a mustering will be easy for Us. | يَوْمَ تَشَقَّقُ الأَرْضُ عَنْهُمْ سِرَاعا ً ۚ ذَلِكَ حَشْرٌ عَلَيْنَا يَسِيرٌ |
| Naĥnu 'A`lamu Bimā Yaqūlūna ۖ Wa Mā 'Anta `Alayhim Bijabbārin ۖ Fadhakkir Bil-Qur'āni Man Yakhāfu Wa`īdi | 050-045* We are quite Aware of what they say: you should not be too demanding on them. Remind anyone who fears My warning by means of the Quran. | نَحْنُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا يَقُولُونَ ۖ وَمَا أَنْتَ عَلَيْهِمْ بِجَبَّارٍ ۖ فَذَكِّرْ بِالْقُرْآنِ مَنْ يَخَافُ وَعِيدِ |
