| THIS CHAPTER contains 59 middle Meccan verses arranged in three Tsections which were again revealed in sequence, after the previous chapter on Luxury 43 and before the next one on Crouching 45. The title comes from the reference in v. 10 (I) to the smoke or haze which will announce the drought preceding Doomsday. It ends with another description, first of Hell, and then of Heaven (III). | Wa Al-Kitābi Al-Mubīni | 044-002* By the Clear Book | وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُبِينِ |
| 'Innā 'Anzalnāhu Fī Laylatin Mubārakatin ۚ 'Innā Kunnā Mundhirīna | 044-003* which We sent down on a blessed night We have been warning about | إِنَّا أَنزَلْنَاه ُ فِي لَيْلَةٍ مُبَارَكَةٍ ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُنذِرِينَ |
| Fīhā Yufraqu Kullu 'Amrin Ĥakīmin | 044-004* In it every wise matter is set forth | فِيهَا يُفْرَقُ كُلُّ أَمْرٍ حَكِيم ٍ |
| 'Amrāan Min `Indinā ۚ 'Innā Kunnā Mursilīna | 044-005* as a command from Our presence; We have been sending | أَمْرا ً مِنْ عِنْدِنَا ۚ إِنَّا كُنَّا مُرْسِلِينَ |
| Raĥmatan Min Rabbika ۚ 'Innahu Huwa As-Samī`u Al-`Alīmu | 044-006* mercy from your Lord. He is the Alert, Aware, | رَحْمَة ً مِنْ رَبِّكَ ۚ إِنَّه ُ هُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ |
| Rabbi As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđi Wa Mā Baynahumā ۖ 'In Kuntum Mūqinīna | 044-007* Lord of Heaven and Earth and anything in between them, if you will be convinced. | رَبِّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضِ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا ۖ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُوقِنِينَ |
| Lā 'Ilāha 'Illā Huwa Yuĥyī Wa Yumītu ۖ Rabbukum Wa Rabbu 'Ābā'ikumu Al-'Awwalīna | 044-008* There is no deity except Him; He gives life and brings death, your Lord and the Lord of your earliest ancestors. Eleventh Hour Belief | لاَ إِلَهَ إِلاَّ هُوَ يُحْيِي وَيُمِيتُ ۖ رَبُّكُمْ وَرَبُّ آبَائِكُمُ الأَوَّلِينَ |
| Bal Hum Fī Shakkin Yal`abūna | 044-009* Instead they play around with doubt. | بَلْ هُمْ فِي شَكٍّ يَلْعَبُونَ |
| Fārtaqib Yawma Ta'tī As-Samā'u Bidukhānin Mubīnin | 044-010* Watch out for the day when the sky will bring obvious smoke | فَارْتَقِبْ يَوْمَ تَأْتِي السَّمَاءُ بِدُخَانٍ مُبِين ٍ |
| Yaghshá An-Nāsa ۖ Hādhā `Adhābun 'Alīmun | 044-011* to envelop mankind; this will mean painful torment: | يَغْشَى النَّاسَ ۖ هَذَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ |
| Rabbanā Akshif `Annā Al-`Adhāba 'Innā Mu'uminūna | 044-012* "Our Lord, remove the torment from us; we are believers!" | رَبَّنَا اكْشِفْ عَنَّا الْعَذَابَ إِنَّا مُؤْمِنُونَ |
| 'Anná Lahumu Adh-Dhikrá Wa Qad Jā'ahum Rasūlun Mubīnun | 044-013* Yet they had the Reminder, and an obvious messenger had already come to them. | أَنَّى لَهُمُ الذِّكْرَى وَقَدْ جَاءَهُمْ رَسُولٌ مُبِين ٌ |
| Thumma Tawallaw `Anhu Wa Qālū Mu`allamun Majnūnun | 044-014* Then they turned away from him and said: "He has been taught it; [he's] so crazy!" | ثُمَّ تَوَلَّوْا عَنْهُ وَقَالُوا مُعَلَّمٌ مَجْنُون ٌ |
| 'Innā Kāshifū Al-`Adhābi Qalīlāan ۚ 'Innakum `Ā'idūna | 044-015* Were We to lift the torment for a while, you would still revert [to it]! | إِنَّا كَاشِفُوا الْعَذَابِ قَلِيلا ً ۚ إِنَّكُمْ عَائِدُونَ |
| Yawma Nabţishu Al-Baţshata Al-Kubrá 'Innā Muntaqimūna | 044-016* Some day We will kidnap everyone in the greatest operation; We shall be Avenged! Pharaoh's People | يَوْمَ نَبْطِشُ الْبَطْشَةَ الْكُبْرَى إِنَّا مُنتَقِمُونَ |
| Wa Laqad Fatannā Qablahum Qawma Fir`awna Wa Jā'ahum Rasūlun Karīmun | 044-017* We tested Pharaoh's folk before them, and a noble messenger came to them: | وَلَقَدْ فَتَنَّا قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمَ فِرْعَوْنَ وَجَاءَهُمْ رَسُول ٌ كَرِيم ٌ |
| 'An 'Addū 'Ilayya `Ibāda Al-Lahi ۖ 'Innī Lakum Rasūlun 'Amīnun | 044-018* "Hand over God's servants to me. I am a trustworthy messenger for you. | أَنْ أَدُّوا إِلَيَّ عِبَادَ اللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّي لَكُمْ رَسُولٌ أَمِينٌ |
| Wa 'An Lā Ta`lū `Alá Al-Lahi ۖ 'Innī 'Ātīkum Bisulţānin Mubīnin | 044-019* Do not act so haughtily concerning God: I bring you clear authority. | وَأَنْ لاَ تَعْلُوا عَلَى اللَّهِ ۖ إِنِّي آتِيكُمْ بِسُلْطَانٍ مُبِينٍ |
| Wa 'Innī `Udhtu Birabbī Wa Rabbikum 'An Tarjumūni | 044-020* I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord, lest you cast me out. | وَإِنِّي عُذْتُ بِرَبِّي وَرَبِّكُمْ أَنْ تَرْجُمُونِ |
| Wa 'In Lam Tu'uminū Lī Fā`tazilūni | 044-021* If you do not believe in me, then keep away from me." | وَإِنْ لَمْ تُؤْمِنُوا لِي فَاعْتَزِلُونِ |
| Fada`ā Rabbahu 'Anna Hā'uulā' Qawmun Mujrimūna | 044-022* So he appealed to his Lord: "These are criminal folk!" | فَدَعَا رَبَّهُ~ُ أَنَّ هَاؤُلاَء قَوْمٌ مُجْرِمُونَ |
| Fa'asri Bi`ibādī Laylāan 'Innakum Muttaba`ūna | 044-023* "Travel with My servants at night for you will be followed. | فَأَسْرِ بِعِبَادِي لَيْلا ً إِنَّكُمْ مُتَّبَعُونَ |
| Wa Atruki Al-Baĥra Rahwan ۖ 'Innahum Jundun Mughraqūna | 044-024* Leave the sea parted; they are an army who will be drowned." | وَاتْرُكِ الْبَحْرَ رَهْوا ً ۖ إِنَّهُمْ جُندٌ مُغْرَقُونَ |
| Kam Tarakū Min Jannātin Wa `Uyūnin | 044-025* How man gardens and fountains have they left behind! | كَمْ تَرَكُوا مِنْ جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُون ٍ |
| Wa Zurū`in Wa Maqāmin Karīmin | 044-026* And crops and a splendid position | وَزُرُوعٍ وَمَقَام ٍ كَرِيم ٍ |
| Wa Na`matin Kānū Fīhā Fākihīna | 044-027* and a life of ease they were delighted with. | وَنَعْمَة ٍ كَانُوا فِيهَا فَاكِهِينَ |
| Kadhālika ۖ Wa 'Awrathnāhā Qawmāan 'Ākharīna | 044-028* Even so We let other folk inherit it from them. | كَذَلِكَ ۖ وَأَوْرَثْنَاهَا قَوْما ً آخَرِينَ |
| Famā Bakat `Alayhimu As-Samā'u Wa Al-'Arđu Wa Mā Kānū Munžarīna | 044-029* Neither Heaven nor Earth wept over them, nor were they allowed to wait. (II) | فَمَا بَكَتْ عَلَيْهِمُ السَّمَاءُ وَالأَرْضُ وَمَا كَانُوا مُنظَرِينَ |
| Wa Laqad Najjaynā Banī 'Isrā'īla Mina Al-`Adhābi Al-Muhīni | 044-030* So We saved the Children of Israel from shameful torment, | وَلَقَدْ نَجَّيْنَا بَنِي إِسْرَائِيلَ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ الْمُهِينِ |
| Min Fir`awna ۚ 'Innahu Kāna `Ālīāan Mina Al-Musrifīna | 044-031* from Pharaoh, who was haughty, so dissipated. | مِنْ فِرْعَوْنَ ۚ إِنَّه ُ كَانَ عَالِيا ً مِنَ الْمُسْرِفِينَ |
| Wa Laqadi Akhtarnāhum `Alá `Ilmin `Alá Al-`Ālamīna | 044-032* We chose them knowingly ahead of [anyone in] the Universe; | وَلَقَدِ اخْتَرْنَاهُمْ عَلَى عِلْمٍ عَلَى الْعَالَمِينَ |
| Wa 'Ātaynāhum Mina Al-'Āyāti Mā Fīhi Balā'un Mubīnun | 044-033* and gave them signs which contained an obvious test. | وَآتَيْنَاهُمْ مِنَ الآيَاتِ مَا فِيه ِِ بَلاَءٌ مُبِين ٌ |
| 'Inna Hā'uulā' Layaqūlūna | 044-034* Yet the latter kept on saying: | إِنَّ هَاؤُلاَء لَيَقُولُونَ |
| 'In Hiya 'Illā Mawtatunā Al-'Ūlá Wa Mā Naĥnu Bimunsharīna | 044-035* "There is only this first death of ours; we will not be raised again. | إِنْ هِيَ إِلاَّ مَوْتَتُنَا الأُولَى وَمَا نَحْنُ بِمُنشَرِينَ |
| Fa'tū Bi'ābā'inā 'In Kuntum Şādiqīna | 044-036* Bring on our forefathers if you have been truthful." Life is Serious | فَأْتُوا بِآبَائِنَا إِنْ كُنتُمْ صَادِقِينَ |
| 'Ahum Khayrun 'Am Qawmu Tubba`in Wa Al-Ladhīna Min Qablihim ۚ 'Ahlaknāhum ۖ 'Innahum Kānū Mujrimīna | 044-037* Are they any better than the people of Tubba and the ones before them whom We wiped out? They were such criminals! | أَهُمْ خَيْرٌ أَمْ قَوْمُ تُبَّعٍ وَالَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ ۚ أَهْلَكْنَاهُمْ ۖ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا مُجْرِمِينَ |
| Wa Mā Khalaqnā As-Samāwāti Wa Al-'Arđa Wa Mā Baynahumā Lā`ibīna | 044-038* We did not create Heaven and Earth and anything in between them just by playing around. | وَمَا خَلَقْنَا السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالأَرْضَ وَمَا بَيْنَهُمَا لاَعِبِينَ |
| Mā Khalaqnāhumā 'Illā Bil-Ĥaqqi Wa Lakinna 'Aktharahum Lā Ya`lamūna | 044-039* We have created them both only [to reveal] the Truth, even though most of them do not realize it. | مَا خَلَقْنَاهُمَا إِلاَّ بِالْحَقِّ وَلَكِنَّ أَكْثَرَهُمْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ |
| 'Inna Yawma Al-Faşli Mīqātuhum 'Ajma`īna | 044-040* The Day for Sorting things out will mean an appointment for everyone, | إِنَّ يَوْمَ الْفَصْلِ مِيقَاتُهُمْ أَجْمَعِينَ |
| Yawma Lā Yughnī Mawláan `An Mawláan Shay'āan Wa Lā Hum Yunşarūna | 044-041* a day when no patron will be able to help a favorite out in any way nor will they be supported | يَوْمَ لاَ يُغْنِي مَوْلى ً عَنْ مَوْلى ً شَيْئا ً وَلاَ هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ |
| 'Illā Man Raĥima Al-Lahu ۚ 'Innahu Huwa Al-`Azīzu Ar-Raĥīmu | 044-042* except for someone whom God has shown mercy to. He is the Powerful, the Merciful. Hell (III) | إِلاَّ مَنْ رَحِمَ اللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّه ُ هُوَ الْعَزِيزُ الرَّحِيمُ |
| 'Inna Shajarata Az-Zaqqūmi | 044-043* The infernal tree | إِنَّ شَجَرَةَ الزَّقُّومِ |
| Ţa`āmu Al-'Athīmi | 044-044* will be food for the sinner; | طَعَامُ الأَثِيمِ |
| Kālmuhli Yaghlī Fī Al-Buţūni | 044-045* like molten copper, it will seethe inside (their) bellies | كَالْمُهْلِ يَغْلِي فِي الْبُطُونِ |
| Kaghalyi Al-Ĥamīmi | 044-046* like a bathhouse boiler: | كَغَلْيِ الْحَمِيمِ |
| Khudhūhu Fā`tilūhu 'Ilá Sawā'i Al-Jaĥīmi | 044-047* "Take him and drag him into the midst of Hades! | خُذُوه ُ فَاعْتِلُوهُ~ُ إِلَى سَوَاءِ الْجَحِيمِ |
| Thumma Şubbū Fawqa Ra'sihi Min `Adhābi Al-Ĥamīmi | 044-048* Then pour some torment of scalding water over his head: | ثُمَّ صُبُّوا فَوْقَ رَأْسِه ِِ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْحَمِيمِ |
| Dhuq 'Innaka 'Anta Al-`Azīzu Al-Karīmu | 044-049* 'Taste it; you were such a powerful noble!"' | ذُقْ إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَزِيزُ الْكَرِيمُ |
| 'Inna Hādhā Mā Kuntum Bihi Tamtarūna | 044-050* This is what you (all) were puzzling over!"' Heaven | إِنَّ هَذَا مَا كُنتُمْ بِه ِِ تَمْتَرُونَ |
| 'Inna Al-Muttaqīna Fī Maqāmin 'Amīnin | 044-051* The heedful will be in a safe position | إِنَّ الْمُتَّقِينَ فِي مَقَامٍ أَمِين ٍ |
| Fī Jannātin Wa `Uyūnin | 044-052* among gardens and springs. | فِي جَنَّاتٍ وَعُيُون ٍ |
| Yalbasūna Min Sundusin Wa 'Istabraqin Mutaqābilīna | 044-053* They will wear satin and brocade as they sit facing one another, just like that | يَلْبَسُونَ مِنْ سُندُسٍ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٍ مُتَقَابِلِينَ |
| Kadhālika Wa Zawwajnāhum Biĥūrin `Īnin | 044-054* and We will wed them to dark-eyed damsels. | كَذَلِكَ وَزَوَّجْنَاهُمْ بِحُورٍ عِين ٍ |
| Yad`ūna Fīhā Bikulli Fākihatin 'Āminīna | 044-055* They will call confidently for every kind of fruit in it. | يَدْعُونَ فِيهَا بِكُلِّ فَاكِهَة ٍ آمِنِينَ |
| Lā Yadhūqūna Fīhā Al-Mawta 'Illā Al-Mawtata Al-'Ūlá ۖ Wa Waqāhum `Adhāba Al-Jaĥīmi | 044-056* They will not taste death there except for the very first death [they had]. He will shield them from the torment of Hades | لاَ يَذُوقُونَ فِيهَا الْمَوْتَ إِلاَّ الْمَوْتَةَ الأُولَى ۖ وَوَقَاهُمْ عَذَابَ الْجَحِيمِ |
| Fađlāan Min Rabbika ۚ Dhālika Huwa Al-Fawzu Al-`Ažīmu | 044-057* as a boon from your Lord; that will be the supreme Achievement! | فَضْلا ً مِنْ رَبِّكَ ۚ ذَلِكَ هُوَ الْفَوْزُ الْعَظِيمُ |
| Fa'innamā Yassarnāhu Bilisānika La`allahum Yatadhakkarūna | 044-058* We have made it easy for your tongue [to recite] in order that they may bear this in mind. | فَإِنَّمَا يَسَّرْنَاه ُ بِلِسَانِكَ لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَذَكَّرُونَ |
| Fārtaqib 'Innahum Murtaqibūna | 044-059* So watch out: they too are watching! | فَارْتَقِبْ إِنَّهُمْ مُرْتَقِبُونَ |
