| THIS SPLENDID chapter of 40 very early Meccan verses was revealed after The Stunning [Blow] 101 and before The Gossipmonger 104. It tells us how we should read the Quran (i) and describes man's stages as he is reproduced or created (ii), just as his spiritual stages are suggested at the very beginning (i). | Lā 'Uqsimu Biyawmi Al-Qiyāmahi | 075-001* I do swear by Resurrection Day, | لاَ أُقْسِمُ بِيَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ |
| Wa Lā 'Uqsimu Bin-Nafsi Al-Lawwāmahi | 075-002* as I swear by the rebuking soul, | وَلاَ أُقْسِمُ بِالنَّفْسِ اللَّوَّامَةِ |
| 'Ayaĥsabu Al-'Insānu 'Allan Najma`a `Ižāmahu | 075-003* does man reckon We shall never gather his bones together [again]? | أَيَحْسَبُ الإِنسَانُ أَلَّنْ نَجْمَعَ عِظَامَهُ |
| Balá Qādirīna `Alá 'An Nusawwiya Banānahu | 075-004* Of course We are Capable of reshaping even his fingertips. | بَلَى قَادِرِينَ عَلَى أَنْ نُسَوِّيَ بَنَانَهُ |
| Bal Yurīdu Al-'Insānu Liyafjura 'Amāmahu | 075-005* Yet man wants to carouse right out in the open. | بَلْ يُرِيدُ الإِنسَانُ لِيَفْجُرَ أَمَامَهُ |
| Yas'alu 'Ayyāna Yawmu Al-Qiyāmahi | 075-006* He asks: "When will Resurrection Day be ?" | يَسْأَلُ أَيَّانَ يَوْمُ الْقِيَامَةِ |
| Fa'idhā Bariqa Al-Başaru | 075-007* When one's sight is dazzled, | فَإِذَا بَرِقَ الْبَصَرُ |
| Wa Khasafa Al-Qamaru | 075-008* and the moon is eclipsed, | وَخَسَفَ الْقَمَرُ |
| Wa Jumi`a Ash-Shamsu Wa Al-Qamaru | 075-009* as the sun and moon are brought together, | وَجُمِعَ الشَّمْسُ وَالْقَمَرُ |
| Yaqūlu Al-'Insānu Yawma'idhin 'Ayna Al-Mafarru | 075-010* on that day (every)man will say: "Where is there any escape?" | يَقُولُ الإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ |
| Kallā Lā Wazara | 075-011* Of course there will be no sanctuary; | كَلاَّ لاَ وَزَرَ |
| 'Ilá Rabbika Yawma'idhin Al-Mustaqarru | 075-012* recourse will be only with your Lord on that day. | إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذ ٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ |
| Yunabba'u Al-'Insānu Yawma'idhin Bimā Qaddama Wa 'Akhkhara | 075-013* Man will be notified that day about anything he has sent on ahead or else held back. | يُنَبَّأُ الإِنسَانُ يَوْمَئِذٍ بِمَا قَدَّمَ وَأَخَّرَ |
| Bali Al-'Insānu `Alá Nafsihi Başīrahun | 075-014* Indeed man holds evidence even against himself | بَلِ الإِنسَانُ عَلَى نَفْسِه ِِ بَصِيرَة ٌ |
| Wa Law 'Alqá Ma`ādhīrahu | 075-015* although he may proffer his excuses. How to Read the Quran | وَلَوْ أَلْقَى مَعَاذِيرَهُ |
| Lā Tuĥarrik Bihi Lisānaka Lita`jala Bihi | 075-016* Do not try to hurry it up with your tongue; | لاَ تُحَرِّكْ بِه ِِ لِسَانَكَ لِتَعْجَلَ بِهِ |
| 'Inna `Alaynā Jam`ahu Wa Qur'ānahu | 075-017* it is up to Us to collect it, as well as [to know how] to recite it. | إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا جَمْعَه ُ وَقُرْآنَهُ |
| Fa'idhā Qara'nāhu Fa Attabi` Qur'ānahu | 075-018* So whenever We do read it, follow in its reading; | فَإِذَا قَرَأْنَاه ُ فَاتَّبِعْ قُرْآنَهُ |
| Thumma 'Inna `Alaynā Bayānahu | 075-019* it is then We Who must explain it! | ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا بَيَانَهُ |
| Kallā Bal Tuĥibbūna Al-`Ājilaha | 075-020* Indeed how you (all) love the fleeting present | كَلاَّ بَلْ تُحِبُّونَ الْعَاجِلَةَ |
| Wa Tadharūna Al-'Ākhiraha | 075-021* while you neglect the Hereafter! | وَتَذَرُونَ الآخِرَةَ |
| Wujūhun Yawma'idhin Nāđirahun | 075-022* Some faces will be radiant on that day, | وُجُوه ٌٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ نَاضِرَة ٌ |
| 'Ilá Rabbihā Nāžirahun | 075-023* looking toward their Lord; | إِلَى رَبِّهَا نَاظِرَة ٌ |
| Wa Wujūhun Yawma'idhin Bāsirahun | 075-024* while other faces will be scowling on that day, | وَوُجُوه ٌٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ بَاسِرَة ٌ |
| Tažunnu 'An Yuf`ala Bihā Fāqirahun | 075-025* thinking that some impoverishing blow will be dealt them. | تَظُنُّ أَنْ يُفْعَلَ بِهَا فَاقِرَة ٌ |
| Kallā 'Idhā Balaghati At-Tarāqī | 075-026* Indeed when it reaches as high as one's collarbone | كَلاَّ إِذَا بَلَغَتِ التَّرَاقِي |
| Wa Qīla Man ۜ Rāqin | 075-027* and someone says: "Who is such a wizard?", | وَقِيلَ مَنْ ۜ رَاقٍ |
| Wa Žanna 'Annahu Al-Firāqu | 075-028* he will suppose that it means leave-taking | وَظَنَّ أَنَّهُ الْفِرَاقُ |
| Wa At-Taffati As-Sāqu Bis-Sāqi | 075-029* while one shin will twist around the other shin [to keep it from moving]; | وَالْتَفَّتِ السَّاقُ بِالسَّاقِ |
| 'Ilá Rabbika Yawma'idhin Al-Masāqu | 075-030* towards your Lord will the Drive be on that day! The Atheist (ii) | إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذ ٍ الْمَسَاقُ |
| Falā Şaddaqa Wa Lā Şallá | 075-031* He was not trusting and did not pray, | فَلاَ صَدَّقَ وَلاَ صَلَّى |
| Wa Lakin Kadhdhaba Wa Tawallá | 075-032* but said: "No!" and turned away. | وَلَكِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى |
| Thumma Dhahaba 'Ilá 'Ahlihi Yatamaţţá | 075-033* Then he stalked off haughtily to his family, | ثُمَّ ذَهَبَ إِلَى أَهْلِه ِِ يَتَمَطَّى |
| 'Awlá Laka Fa'awlá | 075-034* [though] closer to you and even closer! | أَوْلَى لَكَ فَأَوْلَى |
| Thumma 'Awlá Laka Fa'awlá | 075-035* Then closer to you [fies your doom] and still closer! | ثُمَّ أَوْلَى لَكَ فَأَوْلَى |
| 'Ayaĥsabu Al-'Insānu 'An Yutraka Sudáan | 075-036* Does man reckon he'll be left forlorn? | أَيَحْسَبُ الإِنسَانُ أَنْ يُتْرَكَ سُدى ً |
| 'Alam Yaku Nuţfatan Min Manīyin Yumná | 075-037* Was he not once a drop of ejected semen? | أَلَمْ يَكُ نُطْفَة ً مِنْ مَنِيٍّ يُمْنَى |
| Thumma Kāna `Alaqatan Fakhalaqa Fasawwá | 075-038* Then he became a clot, so [God] created and fashioned [him] | ثُمَّ كَانَ عَلَقَة ً فَخَلَقَ فَسَوَّى |
| Faja`ala Minhu Az-Zawjayni Adh-Dhakara Wa Al-'Unthá | 075-039* and made him into two sexes, male and female. | فَجَعَلَ مِنْهُ الزَّوْجَيْنِ الذَّكَرَ وَالأُنثَى |
| 'Alaysa Dhālika Biqādirin `Alá 'An Yuĥyiya Al-Mawtá | 075-040* Is such a Being not Able to revive the dead? | أَلَيْسَ ذَلِكَ بِقَادِرٍ عَلَى أَنْ يُحْيِيَ الْمَوْتَى |
