'Alif-Lām-Mīm Alif L'مm M'ïm.[2.1] أَلِف-لَام-مِيم
Dhālika Al-Kitābu Lā Rayba Fīhi Hudáan Lilmuttaqīna This is the Book in which there is no doubt. (Since its Author, Allah, the Creator of this universe, possesses complete knowledge, there is no room for doubt about its contents.) It is a guide for those who are God conscious,[2.2] ذَلِكَ الْكِتَابُ لاَ رَيْبَ فِيه ِِ هُدى ً لِلْمُتَّقِينَ
Al-Ladhīna Yu'uminūna Bil-Ghaybi Wa Yuqīmūna Aş-Şalāata Wa Mimmā Razaqnāhum Yunfiqūna who believe in the Unseen, who establish Salah (five regular daily prayers) and spend in charity out of what We have provided for their sustenance;[2.3] الَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ الصَّلاَةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنفِقُونَ
Wa Al-Ladhīna Yu'uminūna Bimā 'Unzila 'Ilayka Wa Mā 'Unzila Min Qablika Wa Bil-'Ākhirati Hum Yūqinūna who believe in this Revelation (the Qur'an) which is sent to you (O Muhammad) and the Revelations which were sent before you (Torah, Psalms, Gospel...) and firmly believe in the Hereafter.[2.4] وَالَّذِينَ يُؤْمِنُونَ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ وَبِالآخِرَةِ هُمْ يُوقِنُونَ
'Ūlā'ika `Alá Hudáan Min Rabbihim Wa 'Ūlā'ika Humu Al-Mufliĥūna They are on true Guidance from their Rabb and they are the ones who will attain salvation.[2.5] أُوْلَائِكَ عَلَى هُدى ً مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَأُوْلَائِكَ هُمُ الْمُفْلِحُونَ
'Inna Al-Ladhīna Kafarū Sawā'un `Alayhim 'A 'Andhartahum 'Am Lam Tundhirhum Lā Yu'uminūna In fact, as for those who reject Faith; it is the same, whether you warn them or you don't, they will not believe.[2.6] إِنَّ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا سَوَاءٌ عَلَيْهِمْ أَ أَنذَرْتَهُمْ أَمْ لَمْ تُنذِرْهُمْ لاَ يُؤْمِنُونَ
Khatama Al-Lahu `Alá Qulūbihim Wa `Alá Sam`ihim Wa `Alá 'Abşārihim Ghishāwatun Wa Lahum `Adhābun `Ažīmun Allah has sealed their hearts and their hearing, their eyes are covered, and there is a grievous punishment for them.[2.7] خَتَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ وَعَلَى سَمْعِهِمْ وَعَلَى أَبْصَارِهِمْ غِشَاوَة ٌ وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ عَظِيم ٌ
Wa Mina An-Nāsi Man Yaqūlu 'Āmannā Bil-Lahi Wa Bil-Yawmi Al-'Ākhiri Wa Mā Hum Bimu'uminīna There are some people who say: “We believe in Allah and the Last Day” yet they are not true believers.[2.8] وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَنْ يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الآخِرِ وَمَا هُمْ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
Yukhādi`ūna Al-Laha Wa Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Wa Mā Yakhda`ūna 'Illā 'Anfusahum Wa Mā Yash`urūna They try to deceive Allah and the believers. However, they deceive none except themselves yet they do not realize it.[2.9] يُخَادِعُونَ اللَّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ إِلاّ أَنفُسَهُمْ وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ
Fī Qulūbihim Marađun Fazādahumu Al-Lahu Marađāan Wa Lahum `Adhābun 'Alīmun Bimā Kānū Yakdhibūna There is a disease of deception in their heart; and Allah lets their disease increase, and they shall have painful punishment for the lies they have told.[2.10] فِي قُلُوبِهِمْ مَرَض ٌ فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضا ً وَلَهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيم ٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْذِبُونَ
Wa 'Idhā Qīla Lahum Lā Tufsidū Fī Al-'Arđi Qālū 'Innamā Naĥnu Muşliĥūna When it is said to them: “Do not make mischief on earth,” they say: “We make peace.”[2.11] وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ لاَ تُفْسِدُوا فِي الأَرْضِ قَالُوا إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُصْلِحُونَ
'Alā 'Innahum Humu Al-Mufsidūna Wa Lakin Lā Yash`urūna Beware! They are the ones who make mischief but they do not realize it.[2.12] أَلاَ إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ الْمُفْسِدُونَ وَلَكِنْ لاَ يَشْعُرُونَ
Wa 'Idhā Qīla Lahum 'Āminū Kamā 'Āmana An-Nāsu Qālū 'Anu'uminu Kamā 'Āmana As-Sufahā'u 'Alā 'Innahum Humu As-Sufahā'u Wa Lakin Lā Ya`lamūna When they are told: “Believe as the others believe” they sarcastically ask: “Should we believe like fools?” Be aware! They themselves are the fools, if only they could understand.[2.13] وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمْ آمِنُوا كَمَا آمَنَ النَّاسُ قَالُوا أَنُؤْمِنُ كَمَا آمَنَ السُّفَهَاءُ أَلاَ إِنَّهُمْ هُمُ السُّفَهَاءُ وَلَكِنْ لاَ يَعْلَمُونَ
Wa 'Idhā Laqū Al-Ladhīna 'Āmanū Qālū 'Āmannā Wa 'Idhā Khalaw 'Ilá Shayāţīnihim Qālū 'Innā Ma`akum 'Innamā Naĥnu Mustahzi'ūna When they meet the believers they say: “We are believers,” but when they are alone with their shaitمns, they say: “We are really with you, we were only mocking the believers.”[2.14] وَإِذَا لَقُوا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا قَالُوا آمَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَوْا إِلَى شَيَاطِينِهِمْ قَالُوا إِنَّا مَعَكُمْ إِنَّمَا نَحْنُ مُسْتَهْزِئُونَ
Al-Lahu Yastahzi'u Bihim Wa Yamudduhum Fī Ţughyānihim Ya`mahūna Allah will throw back their mockery on them and leave them alone in their trespasses; so they wander to and fro like the blind.[2.15] اللَّهُ يَسْتَهْزِئُ بِهِمْ وَيَمُدُّهُمْ فِي طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ
'Ūlā'ika Al-Ladhīna Ashtaraw Ađ-Đalālata Bil-Hudá Famā Rabiĥat Tijāratuhum Wa Mā Kānū Muhtadīna These are the people who barter guidance for error: but their bargain is profitless and they are not going to be guided.[2.16] أُوْلَائِكَ الَّذِينَ اشْتَرَوُا الضَّلاَلَةَ بِالْهُدَى فَمَا رَبِحَتْ تِجَارَتُهُمْ وَمَا كَانُوا مُهْتَدِينَ

Şummun Bukmun `Umyun Fahum Lā Yarji`ūna Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will never return to the Right Way.[2.18] صُمّ ٌ بُكْمٌ عُمْي ٌ فَهُمْ لاَ يَرْجِعُونَ

They press their fingers to their ears at the sound of each stunning thunderclap for fear of death: Allah is encircling the unbelievers from all sides.[2.19] أَوْ كَصَيِّب ٍ مِنَ السَّمَاءِ فِيه ِِ ظُلُمَات ٌ وَرَعْد ٌ وَبَرْق ٌ يَجْعَلُونَ أَصَابِعَهُمْ فِي آذَانِهِمْ مِنَ الصَّوَاعِقِ حَذَرَ الْمَوْتِ وَاللَّهُ مُحِيط ٌ بِالْكَافِرِينَ

And if Allah wanted He could have totally taken away their hearing and their sight; for Allah has power over everything.[2.20] يَكَادُ الْبَرْقُ يَخْطَفُ أَبْصَارَهُمْ كُلَّمَا أَضَاءَ لَهُمْ مَشَوْا فِيه ِِ وَإِذَا أَظْلَمَ عَلَيْهِمْ قَامُوا وَلَوْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ لَذَهَبَ بِسَمْعِهِمْ وَأَبْصَارِهِمْ إِنَّ اللَّهَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْء ٍ قَدِير ٌ
